A passing grade ("P") is given when the letter grade would have been "C" or better (minimum 66%). Dr. Lew should be notified in case of any clerical errors.
| Exam #1 | Thursday, July 10, 2008 2:05-3:05 pm |
325 pts. |
| Exam #2 | Thursday, July 31, 2008 |
325 pts. |
There will be NO makeup and NO alternate-scheduled (i.e., "early") exams, unless otherwise required by OSD and California Education Code Section 92640(a). Please do not make travel plans that conflict with Exam #2.
Students who normally require the assistance of OSD to take exams must consult with Dr. Lew as soon as possible regarding test-taking procedures.
Examinations are multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, and short-essay. They include material from lecture and relevant textbook material. You will be told during lecture how responsible you are for material in the textbook that was not thoroughly covered in lecture. Each exam is non-cumulative and covers the 3 previous weeks of the course, including the lecture on the day before the exam. Note, though, that the nature of the material is such that topics covered in later weeks will have some dependence on material learned in earlier weeks, so previous material cannot be completely forgotten and ignored later on.
Please bring your photo identification, either student ID, driver's license, or passport to the exams. The exams are closed book unless otherwise noted beforehand.
The 1-unit lab section is an optional add-on to the 4-unit lecture/discussion. The syllabus for the labs is accessible from the lab information page.
If you entered UCLA before Fall 2002, you will get credit for one Physical Science GE with lab/demo component without needing to enroll in the lab section. If you want to get 5 units of credit for this course, you can enroll in the lab section.
If you entered UCLA during and after Fall 2002, you will get 4 units of Foundations of Scientific Inquiry GE credit if you take just the lecture/discussion component. If you need to fulfill the requirement for one Physical Science GE with lab component (5 units), you need to be enrolled in both the 4-unit lecture/discussion and the 1-unit lab section.
In any case, if you are going to take the 1-unit lab course, you need to be enrolled in it during the same quarter you are enrolled in the lecture/discussion. The lab section has no formal classroom meetings; communications and assignments will be done by email and may utilize computer modules on the textbook publisher's Meteorology Now website.
See the lab information page for details on policies and lab assignments.
Take-home quizzes will consist of fill-in-the-blank and short essay questions related to material given in the lecture. We expect that students submit quizzes that represents what you as an individual would write as if these assignments were given to you in an examination. It is permissible to consult with other students in the course or with tutors or instructors; however, it is not permissible for you to simply copy another student's answers and submit them as your own. It is also not permissible for other students to write up your quizzes for you, unless this has been arranged through the Office of Students with Disabilities (OSD).
Take-home quizzes are due by the end of business hours on the day noted for each assignment (usually the next lecture). Late submissions are penalized 50% for each day late.
In-class quizzes are given once or twice weekly as shown on the lecture schedule either just before the mid-period break or just before the end of class. These quizzes take about 10-15 minutes to complete, and are open-book/notes, and you may confer with other students in the class. You must be present in order to take these quizzes; makeups are possible, but the student must complete it within the timeframe specified by the instructor in class.
Suggested reading assignments from the text will be announced in lecture and tabulated on the web site. Readings are intended to provide additional reference for lecture material. You are not required to learn and/or memorize everything in the reading material, since exams are based on the lectures. It would be helpful if you read through the assignments before the relevant lecture, in order to become somewhat familiar with terms and definitions.
