Dr. Joanne Simpson passed away on March 4, 2010, at the age of 86. A towering and trailblazing figure in tropical meteorology, Joanne was the first woman to receive a Ph.D. in meteorology. Among her many awards and recognitions, two stand out: she received the Rossby award from the American Meteorological Society and membership in the National Academy of Engineering. Joanne was a full professor of meteorology in our Department between 1960-1964. Her research interests included tropical cyclones, cumulus convection, weather modification, and applications of satellites to meteorology.
