Application – How to Apply

Below are step by step instructions, guiding you through the application process. Please follow these instructions carefully.

Thank you for your interest in the UCLA Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences. The deadline to submit your completed application has been extended to January 1, 2009. Your application cannot be evaluated until it is complete. * Financial support may be awarded by the Department at the time of admissions recommendation. Notifications of admission and support will be sent beginning in mid-February. *All applicants are considered for financial support.

The following documentation is required and must be submitted before your application can be reviewed.


1. Application for Graduate Admission, (Part A)

Submit a Graduate Admissions Application on-line from the Graduate Division website AND non-refundable application fee ($70 for US citizens and Permanent Residents, $90.00 for all other applicants).


Send a COMPLETE application packet of Steps #3 - #11 to:

2. Departmental Application

The departmental Supplemental Graduate Program Application is available on-line.


3. Supplementary Information (Part B)

Please provide detailed answers for all relevant questions on the Supplementary Information Form (PDF).


4. Statement of Purpose (Part C)

Please be specific in your Statement of Purpose (PDF) as to the particular research focus you wish to pursue.


5. Three Letters of Recommendation (Part D)

A minimum of three Letters of Recommendation (PDF) should be sent directly from the endorser or in a signed, sealed envelope.


6. General test GRE scores

INSTITUTION CODE: 4837
DEPT./MAJOR CODE: 0501

Official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score report from the Educational Testing Service (ETS) is required.


7. Official Transcripts

Two sets of Official Transcripts (PDF) of all college/university work completed. If transcripts are not in English, an authorized, complete, and exact English translation must also be provided.


8. Evidence of conferral of degree(s)

This may be in the form of a certified copy of a diploma or a notation on the transcript which indicates that the degree has been awarded. Documents not in English must be accompanied by an authorized, complete, and exact English translation.

If you are a domestic applicant (U.S.), skip to step 11. If you are an international applicant please continue on to steps 9 & 10.


9. TOEFL scores (International applicants only)

INSTITUTION CODE: 4837
DEPT./MAJOR CODE: 60

TOEFL scores for international applicants who have not received a degree from an institution in which English is the language of instruction and/or whose first language is not English. Although a copy from ETS is required, submitting a photocopy is recommended. There are often delays in receiving the ETS copy of this record.

11. Other information that may be submitted

A. Publications/related work experience
If the applicant has published in the scientific literature or has related work experience, such publication or experience can add to the overall strength of the application.

B. 2008-2009 Fellowship Application for Entering Graduate Students


NOTES

If you have not taken the GRE or TOEFL (if applicable), you should take it as soon as possible. Official scores received after the application deadline will delay your application evaluation. UCLA discourages the awarding of duplicate degrees and does not defer admissions.
