Abstract

The paper presents path-integrated growth-rate calculations for the linear mode conversion theory of Jones (1976, 1980) for the generation of terrestrial myriametric radiation (TMR). Ray paths were computed using a newly developed ray-tracing program (termed HOTRAY) for a hot two-component plasma model. The model consists of a cold component which has a radial density profile deduced from DE 1 observations, and a hot loss cone component based on observed particle distribution from GEOS 1. Results indicate that backward propagating electrostatic waves can refract into Z mode waves and reach the center of the radio window, where mode conversion into TMR takes place. The generation of TMR was found to be not sensitive to magnetic field intensity variations of 1 or 2 percent.
