Objectives: What are Hurricanes? When and where do they occur? Are they becoming more frequent or stronger? Based on our answers to these questions we will use the full array of available meteorological data to study the recent hurricanes, Katrina and Rita, and put them in the context of past storms. The class will in part be based on the book "Divine Wind: The History and Science of Hurricanes" By Kerry A. Emanuel, publisehd by Oxford University Press. (It is available at the UCLA bookstore, for $45)

Requirements: Grading is Pass/No-Pass, and will be based on attendance, class participation, and a short presentation.
