Dual-Doppler synthesis of the horizontal wind field from 2335:12- 2339:17 UTC 8 June 1995 superimposed on the radar reflectivity (top left and bottom left) and single-Doppler velocity from the atf antenna (top right and bottom right). The black box on the top two figures is enlarged in the bottom two figures. The location of the aircraft (position shown for every 8th scan of the radar) is shown by the icon with the dashed lines representing the viewing angle from the aft antenna. The value of radar reflectivity and Doppler velocity are shown by the color scale at the bottom of the figure.
The synthesis was performed on a 24 by 24 by 7.2Km domain with 300m horizontal and vertical grid spacing. The classical "hook-shaped" echo embedded within a mesocyclone is apparent in the top left figure. The single-Doppler velocities from the aft radar(top right) reveal a prominent rotational couplet with positive and negative velocities > +84 m/s and < -36 m/s, respectively. An enlargement of the hook echo and radial velocity field is shown at the bottom of the above figure. The high spatial resolution (300m) and magnitude of the wind vectors (maximum 80 m/s) are believed to be unprecedented. The results shown here are believed to be the first detailed dual-Doppler measurement of a supercell that spawned an F5 tornado.
