AS 180 Model Task #4 - Dispersion errors in the leapfrog scheme.

Below is an animated GIF from a two-dimensional simulation using the second-order leapfrog scheme applied to the advection problem. The advecting velocities are constant (15 m/s) in space and time and the model domain is doubly periodic. The initial condition is a circular symmetric perturbation with maximum amplitude of 10 (arbitrary units). As the perturbation moves, noise appears in its wake due to dispersion error. The small wavelengths that were originally contained in the perturbation are not being advected properly.

The GIF will loop continuously. This is a 1.4 Mb graphic, and so may load slowly.
