Hurricane Andrew (1992)

It wasn't the strongest hurricane to make landfall in the United States (Hurricane Camille was), and it wasn't the deadliest (advanced observational and computing tools save lives even as coastal populations grow), but it was the most expensive hurricane in terms of economic damage.

The last image of Andrew by Miami radar

The radar that took this picture was located on the roof of the National Hurricane Center (labeled "NHC" on the figure). Shortly after this image was recorded, Andrew's winds destroyed the radar. The eye of the storm (very well shown on the figure) came ashore near Homestead, just south of Miami. Click on the figure to enlarge.

Andrew as seen by Melbourne, FL radar

Melbourne is located on Florida's east coast, north of Miami. The southern part of Andrew is not visible because it is either out of the radar's range or masked by the northern segment of the storm. Click on the figure to enlarge.
