Ring Current
Modeling during Geomagnetic Storms

Magnetospheric convection electric field variability during the Jan 1997 magnetic storm
Magnetic
storms are characterized by a pronounced intensification of the global magnetospheric electric field, driven by disturbed solar
wind conditions. The electric field
causes an intensification of the energy density of ring current ions in the
inner magnetosphere. Following the storm these ions are removed by charge
exchange and wave-particle scattering processes. In collaboration with V. Jordanova (LANL) we are attempting to understand the
processes responsible for ring current formation and decay during storms.
