RECOMMENDED READING

This is a first draft, which is still quite rough and incomplete, of a list of books that are commonly used in atmospheric and oceanic sciences. Some are texts while others are monographs, and there is a wide range of complexity. We have tried to organize them into three broad categories that move from the fundamentals to specialized topics. Please take a look, and send suggestions and comments to brianpm@atmos.ucla.edu. We are interested in other books as well as short comments about the books already on the list. And suggestions for organization are encouraged.

Introduction to Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences

Meteorology Today, 7th Edition
by C. Donald Ahrens
Publisher: Thompson International
Comments: A very fast introduction to weather for people with no background in atmospheric sciences and a few hours to kill.

ISBN: 0534372147

Earth Under Seige
by Rich Turco
Publisher: Oxford University Press; (June 1997)
Comments: Parts of this book become very chatty, bordering on preachy, but it is a good basic introduction to atmospheric chemistry, climate, and air pollution. It is used sometimes as the textbook for AS2.

Fundamentals of Fluid Dynamics

Physical Fluid Dynamics
Author:
D.J. Tritton
Publisher:
Oxford University Press; 2nd edition (November 1988)
Comments:
This is an excellent introduction to fluid dynamics in general, and it has quite a lot of content focused on geophysical flows. You should read this book as much as possible before and during your first year of grad school; it will help take away some of the physical misunderstandings that can crop up in the dynamics courses.

An Introduction to Fluid Dynamics
Author:
G.K. Batchelor
Publisher:
Cambridge University Press; (August 1973)
IBSN:
0521098173
Comments:
Gets a bit into the nitty gritty, so it's a bit harder than Tritton, but supposedly a very nice introduction.

Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (Synoptic Meteorology, Large-scale Dynamics)

An Introduction to Dynamic Meteorology
by
James R. Holton
Publisher:
Academic Press; 3rd edition (April 1992)
ISBN:
012354355X
Comments:
Most programs use this as the text for the first year dynamics course. Covers most topics for GFD, but definitely with a bias toward synoptic meteorology. The 4th Edition has also been released.

Every other graduate program in ATMOSCI

Atmosphere-Ocean Dynamics (International Geophysics Series)
by
Adrian E. Gill
Publisher:
Academic Press; (November 1982)
ISBN:

Comments:
Whatever Holton lacks in terms of oceanography, Gill makes up. This one is mostly for advanced grad students.

by
Joseph Pedlosky
Publisher:
Springer Verlag; 2nd edition (January 23, 1998)
ISBN:
