WIRELESS NETWORKING @ UCLA

Dear UCLA Student:

I am pleased to announce the launch of UCLA's Unified Public Network (UPN) for data wireless access at a number of select public and department locations on campus. The UPN organizes the public campus wireless networks into a uniform service for the UCLA community, regardless of location.

During the past several years, UCLA has successfully pilot-tested a data wireless system that allows students, faculty and staff with laptops or PDA's equipped with wireless network cards (802.11b compliant) to remotely log onto the campus network to access email, most campus services, and the Internet within the coverage areas.

Key public locations include Northern Lights and North Campus food facilities, 1st and 3rd floors of Young Research Library, Murphy Sculpture Garden, and Ackerman Union 1st floor Terrace Food Court. Additional locations are available in some department areas.

To obtain further information on current wireless locations you can view the public coverage map at http://www.bol.ucla.edu/services/wireless/coverage/. Both a static or Flash animated map is available for your reference. By clicking on the Flash map, you will be able to view the locations, coverage areas, and access points for each registered network. Both outdoor common coverage areas and departmental (in-building) coverage areas are shown.

Visit the CTS Managed Network Services, Bruin Online website at http://www.bol.ucla.edu/wireless/ or call (310) 825-7452, option 1 for more information on accessibility requirements and the latest wireless updates.

Sincerely,

Jim Davis
Associate Vice Chancellor, Information Technology
